The latest survey of the legal profession by the NZ Law Society has found that 70.3 per cent (yes 70.3%) of all family lawyers in practice today are women. Last year 60.7 per cent of all law gradutes were women. Slightly down on 2010 when 62.9 per cent of all law graduates were women.
When it comes to solving problems outside of the courtroom by arbitration however a huge 78.6 per cent of lawyers in this area of alternative dispute resolution are men!
There are 20 female Family Court judges and 28 male Family Court judges. There are more female judges in the Family Court compared to any other Court in New Zealand. In total there are 152 male and 57 female judges in New Zealand. Twenty of these of course being in the Family Court.
Spare a moment’s pity for the poor people of Wellington who have the highest concentration of lawyers for any place in New Zealand. In Wellington there is one lawyer for every 88 people in that city!!!
Best place in New Zealand to get away from these bastards is Kawerau where there is only one lawyer for every 7000 people!
Nor is the money as good as some may think. The average salaries for lawyers (non partners) ranged from $45,500pa to $169,000pa.
