A man who threw an ostrich egg at his wife because her pet pig damaged his tools has been sent to jail.

Phillip Marau Glanville Russell, 47, lost his temper when he discovered the pig had caused $2500 of damage to his saw.

Russell was sentenced to six months’ jail when he appeared in Hastings District Court yesterday, after earlier pleading guilty to charges including assault using an ostrich egg as a weapon.

He picked an argument with his wife of 20 years when she came home to their rural Waipawa property with their 9-year-old in early July.

He swore at her before spitting at her four or five times. He then grabbed a large ostrich egg from the kitchen table and threw it at her with force. The heavy egg hit her in the chest, causing bruising.

His lawyer, Antony Willis, said Russell had asked his wife repeatedly to keep the pig under control because it had damaged their house, their neighbour’s house and council property. But his wife insisted it should be given free range.

The offending occurred while Russell was subject to a sentence of supervision. He has been in custody since appearing in court on July 10.

  1. Why stop at one (if it’s gonna get you 6months)? Why not throw 6?
Will his (ex?) wife retain custody of the pig, when the (eventually) seperate?
Will she get the same sentence, should she throw an ostrich egg at him?
What about the damage to the unborn ostrich? never shake a baby!

  2. I had assumed it was a souviner egg that was hollow and thought the NZ Cricket team might recruit him for his strong arm. Leaving a bruise from a hollow egg is some feat. I then wondered if the pig came and devoured the remains of the egg if it wasn’t hollow.

  4. One wonders what this woman will get for killing her husband with a coffee cup ? Seeing as it’s in America, she’ll probably got to jail. If she was in NZ she’d most likely get supervision or home detention.

  5. golfa, we can expect some claim that he was being violent towards her (economically violent?) and her only option was to kill him. She will then get a low sentence for manslaughter. You never know, but that’s a realistic expectation based on history.
