Shore Fathers is a North Shore men's community project which not only caters for the traditional dad, but also all other fathers:
- Grandfathers, stepfathers, lone fathers,
- adoptive fathers, fathers' to be,
- custodial fathers, non-custodial fathers,
- ... Or even simply prospective fathers.
Convener of this group is Craig Davis, a member of the Men's Centre North Shore executive committee in 1994. Support group meets irregularly - a mixture of single dads, housedads, and shared or non-custodial fathers - offers support and practical help.
About Shore Fathers
This is an informal group set up to:
- Encourage and support fathers in the community.
- Provide a number of services which will enhance the role of the father in the family.
- Provide information from the various agencies on the North Shore so that our members are fully informed of their entitlements and other services.
- Organise group activities that encourage family participation.
- Implement parenting skills courses which are available to all who are interested.
Aims
- Supporting with friendship.
- Developing parenting skills.
- Encouraging self esteem and personal growth.
- Promoting leisure activities.
- Providing a platform for personal and family growth.
- Be an information resource on the role of fathers.
Objectives
- To promote and encourage the well-being of the family by supporting the father in his role.
- To provide training opportunities for local Fathers to enhance their personal growth.
- To investigate the needs within the local community.
- To provide appropriate venues with child facilities.
- To promote training within the community via various networks.
- To run focus groups, in conjunction with other agencies, to enhance the role of father in the family.
- To promote Shore Fathers as a viable, ongoing entity within the community by ensuring that all activities held are evaluated. The information gathered will be used as the basis for further groups of seminars in the future.
Activities run by Shore Fathers
Two parenting with Confidence courses - both very successful.
Kids in Parks - in association with Jill Nerheny.
Father's Day Event at Shepherd's Park - sport and fun games day. Loads of fun had by all.
Teddy Bears' Picnic in Auckland Domain - both children and teddy bears all arrived and departed intact and all went back to their respective homes.
Kids Safe Week - teaching children and parents alike to be safe and to be aware of potential dangers, The Caltex bouncy castle was enjoyed by all.
BBQs at farms, beaches and parks.
