Where is the deterrent for female offending?

We can’t say that women have never been criminals. I recall as a child the local Postmistress being jailed for “borrowing’ money in an elaborate fraud that eventually became too big to conceal. Certainly there is a frequency and variety of offending that we now see in the media, that we didn’t see before.

Women’s Refuge theft:

Women’s Refuge chief executive Heather Henare said the case had brought the organisation into disrepute but it was not the sentence or reparation figure they were concerned with. “What we want to achieve is for Kathy to get the help she needs so she’s no longer a risk to the community,” she said.

Kathy?

A gambling-addicted former Women’s Refuge manager who cheated the charity out of more than $100,000 won’t have to pay it back. Nor will she go to jail.

The money for the refuge came from Social Development Ministry funds and emergency community grants given due to an increase in service needs. Nearly all of the emergency money was used to fund Grant’s gambling.

I’m left wondering how many times this might have happened and not been reported? Was it only the size of the theft or because it was tax-payer grants that it was reported?

Again in this story the issue is brought to light not through the courts but an ERA investigation. The matter not being processed through the courts surely adds to under reporting of female crime. How can employers rely on criminal report checks during the employment process?

Authority member Eleanor Robinson also said her employers had found her responsible for accounting discrepancies totalling about $20,000 at the preschool.

Facebook predator:

Parents spoke of the horrendous effects on sons who had been caught in her web, and one mother believed Burgess was at least partly responsible for her son’s suicide in October 2010.

Natalia Burgess, 29, was unmasked in early 2011 after scores of Christchurch boys admitted they had been drawn in by her posing as an attractive teenage girl on numerous fake Facebook profiles.

Judge Gerard Winter was prepared to sentence Burgess last week but at the last minute, her father tendered his house as a possible home detention address.

Irresponsible dog owner

Nadia Wrigley, 35, admitted this week in the Nelson District Court one charge under the Dog Control Act, of failing to ensure that “Missy”, her labrador-bull cross, did not injure, endanger, or distress any livestock.

Apart from the $500 fine, Wrigley was ordered to pay $9000 in reparation and the clean-up costs. This sum included a $1000 emotional harm payment, to be split between those who had to clean up the 58 carcases from the mauling.

No Deterent Here

A Hamilton judge gave a Cambridge woman a get out of jail free card today after asking her to write him a letter of remorse expressing how sorry she was for ripping off taxpayers of nearly $200,000.

Dudeck now claims the dubious title of Waikato’s worst benefit fraudster, after overtaking Sandra Epere, 52, who was last year sentenced for claiming more than $186,075 over 19 years after claiming a benefit while married.

I am little curious as to why the journalist named the Judge as Peter Spiller and then referred to the Judge as ‘she’.

  1. Update on Facebook predator.

Natalia Burgess (29 the Christchurch Facebook predator did contact one of the mothers,

… She did randomly message me making excuses for her behaviour. That she was adopted and she had a hard life.”

  2. This is an interesting comparison:

A woman who steals $100,000 from Women’s Refuge and walks away.

A Gore woman who steals nearly half a million dollars from her boss has been jailed for nearly 4 years.

  4. The fact that being $100,000 down didn’t impact on their services, seems to indicate that they are way too much over funded by Government, Government Departments and private donors too.

Sounds like time to review all of their Government funding and cut it back to just the job they are funded to perform.

Downunder’s comparison is relevant. There is only a moderate factor between the sums involved and on usual sentencing guidelines, there would be only a small difference in sentence. Both seem to be first offences.

Maybe further cuts in funding would deliver improved social value to NZ? Cheers, MurrayBacon.

  5. Surely dear old JonKey as head of our country, government, and chief sponsor of the woman’s refuge, should be demanding reparation of the funds so generously donated on our behalf? Or at least refusing to donate any further funds until the woman’s refuge have recovered the full amount stolen?
Or is there further endemic over-drawing of funds and lavish self-spending within WR, that for them to pursue reparation would be blatantly hypercritical?

  10. But here’s the big story …
    (Press release SFO)

Two former employees of a charity that offered domestic violence prevention services for Pacific Islanders have been charged by the Serious Fraud Office.
Tapualii Raewyn Uitime (47) and Betty Leuina Sio (54), both of Auckland, entered no plea when they appeared at the Manukau District Court today.
Ms Uitime, who was the operations manager at the now defunct Pacific Island Safety and Prevention Project (the Project), faces 26 charges of ‘Dishonestly using a document’ and 11 charges of ‘Forgery’. Ms Sio, who was the charity’s chief executive, faces four charges of ‘Dishonestly using a document’.
The Auckland-based organisation received funding from the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Justice and the Department of Corrections. It offered a range of social support services including a Pacific cultural framework for addressing family violence, family violence education and domestic violence prevention programmes for men.
Ms Uitime and Ms Sio have been remanded on bail to reappear at the Manukau District Court on 30 October.
