Maryan Street has come a long way

Minister of Housing Maryan Street, under pressure for exorbitant spending of taxpayers’ money, has come a long way since 1981 when she was a teacher at Westlake Girls’ High School. (Herald 28th May)

Back then she was a lesbian activist prominent in the Feminist Teachers group who were busily spearheading the push to abolish corporal punishment in schools.

She was also writing enthusiastically in their June newsletter about how well was going their politicising of “high school feminists” from various Auckland schools.

She has been at such activism ever since, and went on to become, among other things, a “co-parent” and, of course, our big-spending Minister of Housing.

According to the N.Z.Herald of 31st October 2007 Street is the “partner” of P.M. Helen Clark’s Press Secretary, Kathryn Street, “and has a teenage daughter.

As early as 1985 Street was on the Labour Party’s influential Policy Council and in 1987 was promoting Trade Union Education. By 1993 she was in charge of a Trade Union course at University of Auckland. According to the Sunday Star 28th March 1993, in a feature on “Rebels of the Seventies”, she was listed as Director of the Centre for Labour Studies.

The Sunday Star of 18th April 1993 featured her as the new President of the Labour Party. Then on 13th July of that year she was wearing her homosexual activist hat as part of the widespread lobbying to amend the N.Z. Human Rights Commission Act for more homosexual “rights”. On the homosexual programme Radio GALA on Auckland’s Access Radio she was heard addressing the homosexual Isherwood Trust. Inter alia, she claimed that “homosexuals are essential in teaching, child care and youth groups to help young homosexuals (re) suicide”! She also outlined a strategy for the coming
Parliamentary debate on the HRC Amendment Bill.

The N.Z.Herald of 29th July 2000 reported, under “Jobs for the girls”, that Street had been appointed to the Board of the Housing Corporation, with the remark that “The Housing Minister omitted to mention that (Street) was also a former Labour Party President”.

Becoming a Labour List M.P. with the 2005 General Election, on 17th November of that year the N.Z.Herald reported part of her Maiden Speech of the previous day, which she preferred to call her “Inaugural Speech”. One excerpt:-

She lashed out at critics of political correctness, saying that they undermine democracy…….. “The shabby, slovenly thinking behind the detractors of what is pejoratively termed political correctness must be seen for the crass political opportunism that it is.”

By 31st October 2007 Street was elevated to Cabinet as Minister of Housing, Associate Minister of Tertiary Education and Economic Development.
