About 20 men from various Auckland men's organisations turned up to the 'piknik' at the Auckland Domain, organised by Kerry Bevan (centre of photo). His aim is to lobby for the creation of a Ministry of Men's Affairs, to balance the gender-biased input into NZ legislation from the Ministry of Women's Affairs with it's $5 million budget.
Although some of us expressed reservations about the basic principle of defining social policy on the basis of gender, and raised fears about the motivation of men who might run such a ministry, there was unanimous agreement that men's needs are not currently being addressed effectively. Most of the participants mentioned the unfair treatment fathers receive in the Family Court, and the increasing social problems caused by children growing up without input from men.
The early spring weather made it a bit wet to sit on the grass, so the nearby grandstand made a useful place to find dry seating. Mensline's Mark Bradman reads a poem.
