Help For Men Abused By Women
An Auckland man is helping men who have been physically or mentally abused by women.
Warren Heap set up the Separated Fathers' Support Trust five years ago, and has now opened a crisis centre in Manurewa.
The four-bedroom home is a short-term safe haven for battered men and their children. It is partly funded by money from Lotto and the proceeds of gambling machines.
Warren Heap says it is a myth that women are more liable to suffer abuse.
He says the problem is under-reported from a man's perspective, because not many men would admit to being bashed.
Mr Heap says it is likely they would not be believed if they went to the authorities.
He says a roof over their heads is not the only issue for abused men and there can be other problems, particularly if there is been a recent separation. Those include legal matters, and holding down a job.
