Dominion Post:Dads’ army does itself no favours
15 May 2006
In recent weeks, fathers angry that the Family Court has denied them the kind of access to their children they believe they deserve have tried a new tactic, writes The Dominion Post in an editorial. Instead of merely bombarding MPs and newspaper editors with phone calls and letters, they have opted to picket the private homes of some of the court’s judges in Auckland and the Waikato. Chief Family Court Judge Peter Boshier — a breath of fresh air in this most emotional of courts — says the noisy protests amount to a “personal vendetta by individuals who do not respect the legitimacy of the court”.
…Family Court detractors are entitled to their views. They will be right, sometimes, that the legal process has not delivered them and their children a just result. But while men continue to beat up or kill their wives and girlfriends, the court’s judges are, from time to time, obliged to rule that mum should have primary custody and make an order telling her husband or boyfriend to stay away. Sadly, this is a court in which there are no winners.
