Movember – Changing the face of Men’s Health

Movember (the month formally known as November) is a charity event held during November each year.

At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants known as Mo Bros then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache and along the way raise as much money and awareness about male health issues as possible.

Movember is proudly partnering with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.

  1. Thanks for the post JP.
It sounds like a great cause to be supporting.
Pity it doesn’t include something women could do to show their support to though eh?

  3. The last paragraph of the article caught my eye.
Men do need to become more experienced in talking about our bodies.
This will help us in speaking to our children about sexuality and relationships too.
Also help in talking to our doctors…..
I don’t buy the uninvestigated part so much, but that is by the bye.

“Women have a language to talk about these sorts of things,” Kennedy notes. “For a long time men haven’t been involved in the conversation about how their bodies and their sense of self is shaped. So the knee-jerk reaction is anger and defensiveness. Because categories like maleness, whiteness and wealth maintain their power by being uninvestigated. So when we finally do start investigating, it can be disconcerting for people.”

  4. I have not read the article yet.

As a woman your body confronts you, so we get used to it naturally.

With Men, the body confronts them in a more intimate nature and it includes the opposite sex as well…so it is hidden more.

Apart from this Man has always had to be more stoic, more brave and nature taught him to hide any weaknesses.

We are human, our history the was it was is so large compared to the current reversal trends.

No one can expect change by force, you can not ask this…respect for our past as humans must still be upheld, no individual or group can be blamed for history.

  5. Okay,, I just read the article, this being a mens’ site, I could not possibly comment.

…however, did the researcher really need to investigate such correlation?

  6. Okay, I will then..in my experience, as long as a man is comfortable in his own skin, his self esteem is fine.

The same goes for woman really, for instance, on the negative side, I have often found obese women are angry people that bully.

  7. … as long as a man is comfortable in his own skin, his self esteem is fine.

I think men’s self esteem might run a little deeper than the thickness of his skin.

and nature taught him to hide any weaknesses

I felt that hiding weakness was socialised into me, but that was in the past.
What matters now is men developing skills for understanding ourselves (head and body) and being able to talk these issues through with those people that are important to us, in particular our children.
    Much practice might make perfect.
To improve the quality of social policy, we need to know more about causation, not just study correlations. That has dropped us into too many stupid holes in the past.
And being stupid, we are sitting in these holes far too long.

  9. # 7… of course, I am sure self esteem in fact comes from the soul…just a figure of speech.

speaking of the future of health in general… I read article the other day whereby they did a study with newborns, they put two mobile objects above the children, one a face and the other an object, i can not remember off hand if it was mechanical, maybe just block like, however they found that the baby girls looked mainly at the face and the boys the object, going on to say this was the empathetical nature of the women….and so on. The article is lengthy and scientific, interesting and I guess, in the end, we might all be like the people that live on star ship enterprise.

Seriously though, Men as a whole have the same ability to get from our governing system as anyone. The medical and mental health services need input from men for issues to be highlighted.
All you have to do it put yourself first once in a while, that is what everyone is doing these days anyway, it does not mean you have to take more than what you need.

All you have to do it put yourself first once in a while,

Spot on. By the time most men wake up, it is too late for them…….. Quite a few women find the same too……. Look before you leap?

  11. # 9,,,Amen to Look before you leap, this is the lesson to learn,,,sad to think that prevention is the only cure for the ones who do get caught in the web.

  12. #10 this is something we found in the days of UOF.

Guys trying to hang in there, when they did eventually put themselves first, which was giving up in desperation – they really had no idea of the talk that was traveling in women’s circles and in legal conversations.

The contract they bought into was being ripped up and rewritten faster than they could afford it.

The shadow of the past is catching up and like after the Second World War era, there will be many old ladies alone with a house falling down around them.

  13. #12,,, what was the UOF??

    Comment by mama — Sat 11th August 2018 @ 3:38 pm

  14. It’s an abbreviation for Union of Fathers.

  15. #14,, thank you Evan, does it still exist?

    Comment by mama — Sat 11th August 2018 @ 7:48 pm

  16. UOF is the sleeping giant.

It only existed because people needed it and enough people wanted change.

That’s history, we’re all grumpy old men now.
