Impact of abortion on men

Filed under: Boys / Youth / Education,Gender Politics,General,Men's Health — MurrayBacon @ 7:58 am Fri 25th November 2011

This topic is not discussed sufficiently. Although men are sometimes derided, for getting women into the situation where an abortion may be “needed”, men may experience strong feelings of loss and hurt. If these are not understood, they may come back as psychological problems….

This difficult topic is well covered, in my opinion, on Life Trust website. This website covers many contentious topics, very well.

How Abortion Affects American Men

The Life Trust website also links back to the original paper, on which it is based. This paper is quite long, but if this issue resonates inside you, I suggest to work through it slowly.

We need to be aware of this issue, in supporting men through separations, as there is quite often buried hurt in this area. Remember that about 1/3 of pregnancies are aborted in NZ, even some within marriage.

Lots of love,

  1. Hi Murray,
There is a post doctoral student working out of the Antropology Department of Otago University on this topic. The work has been happening over about the past 12 months and should have initial findings early next year. It is being lead by one of the faculty and the post Doctoral student comes from the US.

  2. That’s one aspect of it. Dr Fitzgerald is exploring the social and cultural management of human reproduction referring to anthropological and gender analysis of family formation, population control, traffic of women and children, fertility products, adoption, surrogacy, reproductive technologies and the commoditisation of procreation.

  3. Thanks for the connection. I hope that when people really understand that fertility is a responsibility that is best respected, like lightning or fire, or earthquakes (makes the earth move?), then maybe we wouldn’t bring these calamities down on ourselves, like axeheads.

When I dissect, with the luxury of not having to be able to put back together and bring back to life, then it is surprising how ubiquitous abortion grief is. The long term effects are easy to see, whereas the cause and linkages are so much harder to spot, due to the self unawareness of most sufferers, like my lost self. I believe that I have seen examples, where the grief has passed down 2 generations.

Mindfulness should lead to us being able to solve our own problems, in a Buddhist way. But we spend too much time rushing around, like headless chooks, to decide where we want our life to go.

  4. In order to minimise any potential impact on men,
I hereby decree that no woman should have to inform any partner or other male, of any suspected preganancy or intended termination thereof.
Should the woman’s partner or any other male be aware of said pregnancy, then I decree that that male person or persons shall be entitled to no say or input of ny kind into said intended termination.
I further decree that God Himself shall have no say, and indeed I hereby override all biblical reference, implied or explicit, covering matters of pregnancy and/or termination thereof.
Finally, I decree that any said male [God included] that attempts to input or otherwise express their views over said matter of pregnancy, that they will be deemed ‘controlling’ of said woman, and must thereafter attend a 16 week Anti-Violence programme.
To further support this ruling, I hereby decree that woman, should she decide not to terminate said pregnancy, shall have full right of decision over whether the purported father of the child shall appear noted on said child’s birth certificate, and regardless of this, he shall be charged a proportion of his income for up to 19 years, to be paid to said woman, in respect of said child.
I rule this to be fair and reasonable representqation over the maother’s rights and control over all matters relating to said child, including it’s very right to life., to the preclusion of said male.
Finally, I hereby decree that should the mother be herself a minor, then her parents are not to be informed by any institution or individual of their daughter’s pregannancy, to ensure that the mother’s father makes no attempt to control the mother in her decision regarding termination of her child’s life.
