A report (see here) commissioned by the Public Service Association (PSA) has made a number of recommendations it says will save businesses millions and help victims break the cycle of violence.
Report author, Suzanne Snively puts the cost of domestic violence to New Zealand business at $368 million a year.
Recommendations include workplaces adopting domestic violence policies to train employees about abuse and implementing a national policy allowing victims of domestic violence to take up to 10 days off work as special leave. (more…)
Men have long been the most frequent victims of violence and the most severe violence. While feminists don slut clothes to march demanding safety from attack on the streets (and fair enough too), the truth is that a sole male out on the streets of our cities at night is more at risk of violent attack than is a sole woman. Tannery finned 163K
The tannery was evacuated and the unconscious men were eventually pulled from the building by co-workers, who found two breathing masks that enabled them to make it up to the mezzanine.
I wonder if this was because of on-site training or whether these guys worked out some way to save their fellow workers?
Interesting article – I hope these guys get some recognition for their quick thinking and action.
Bravery awards for heroes that saved a mate
When a team of police officers went in to save a mate and put their own lives at risk during an Auckland shooting, no one was thinking about getting a bravery medal.
I don’t have an opinion on this, I am merely posting it because
a) It is more likely to affect men
b) A select committee has expanded the bill.
I don’t have any information to hand on that but if anyone does please comment.
Legislation cracks down on child abusers
A select committee is recommending more details be required to define professions where employees will be security vetted.
It’s also added 18 extra offences to the list of convictions that’d ban a person from working with, or having responsibility for, children in their job.
ACC has decided to fund a pilot “healthy relationship” programme in secondary schools. In a Dominion Post report on Stuff, ACC to take lead in sex education, it is claimed that the corporation received 4800 sexual violence claims last year and spent about $44 million treating the victims.

Interesting to see this on the front page of the Stuff website on a Sunday morning.
Men Failing in a Woman’s World
What’s even more interesting, is that a reporter sought the opinion of a masculist crusader.
comments were sparked by new research showing New Zealand blokes get a “raw deal” in education, health and wellbeing.
Men are more likely to fail at school, ditch university, end up in prison and commit suicide than women, according to the AUT study.
Meanwhile, females are racing ahead in education, commanding flexible working conditions and have longer life expectancy.
Self-described masculist Kerry Bevin said the women’s rights movement went too far and men are paying the price in the “feminist aftermath”.
We should not however, (more…)
Story here: Female paedophile, 21, is jailed for two years after she had sex with an eight-year-old boy 50 times, starting when she was 16 .
The lack of transparently between male and female sentences is not just a New Zealand problem. I suppose she would be out in say 9 months. That’s 5.47 days jail per statutory rape.
If it were a male I would say 25 years and not out until the last moment. Even then under restrictions and monitored.
But who dares change it. What politician wants to get off side with the feminists and risk their future?
Families Commission reform
This is another of the lemon deals we got from Dunne. Is the country finally coming to its senses?
Significant reforms of the Families Commission have been passed into law.
The Government’s had the numbers to pass legislation enacting the changes.
It sees the Commission cut to just one Commissioner and removes over $14 million of its funding.
That cash will be used to fund a new social policy evaluation unit
What is a social policy evaluation unit?
And now, a new low for our criminal justice system when Lucille Scollay yesterday was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment with no minimal parole period, meaning she can and probably will be out of prison in 2 years for stabbing to death her husband. (more…)
Well known journalist Bettina Arndt is researching an article focussed on the recent academic paper in which 110 leading family researchers supported overnight care of infants and toddlers.
She’s urgently seeking men to interview whose contact with their young children has been adversely affected by assumptions in our family law system that such overnight care is damaging for young children. She’s particularly interested in cases where the “research” by Jen McIntosh was used to justify such decisions.

I have just had my “assessment” for the next year arrive in the mail yesterday. What I am bewildered about is that the IRD gives me a “living allowance” of $288.00 a week? The average rent for a 3 bedroom house in Auckland is $550.00 a week on it’s own let alone food, power, water, transport. petrol etc. How the hell do they expect anyone to live on an allowance of $288.00? This is so out of date it’s ridiculous. The more ridiculous thing is that they give me a living allowance of $288.00 yet they want me to pay over $400 a week in “child support” for my 2 year old Son?!?!? How can this possibly be justified? Child support should be just that.. support for the child. How can a 2 year old possibly cost over $400 a week? This is not child support, this is criminal support going to my nasty ex-wife. Has anyone actually taken the IRD on the definition of child support? Surely the support of a 2 year old can’t be almost double what they give me as a living allowance? Child support should be a set amount depending on the age of the child, not worked out based on my income. Children cost the same amount to raise no matter how much money you earn. I am seriously thinking of taking the IRD to court over this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers! : )
I haven’t followed this case in any detail so I am not suggesting that it is necessarily a good example but if anyone has been following it, they may like to comment on that aspect.
What I am suggesting is that since the Kahui case, which essentially remains unresolved, we have seen an increase in the number of cases where both parents are being prosecuted for neglecting a child.

Self Representation and McKenzie Friend Course Notes
These notes were recorded from the Seminar arranged and funded by Jim Bagnall, at Remuera Bowling Club.
Although these notes are now quite old, legislation has been meddled with and changed, but some things just seem to stay the same?

Conviction, sentencing stats show crime down
Statistics released by the Ministry of Justice today show the number of people being charged in court has reduced by more than 20 per cent since 2009, Justice Minister Judith Collins says.
The Conviction and Sentencing Statistics, published on the Statistics New Zealand website, show 98,783 people appeared in court in 2012, down 7 per cent from 2011 and 22 per cent from 2009.

(Was missing now found)
I am not posting this simply out of concern for James – I’m a little staggered at the abysmal response.
Firstly the Police media report is a little blase about a missing male, and I would question whether the later Stuff report was generated by a journalist or by his family contacting the media.
This man is on his way to work, running late, gets a warning for speeding in Bulls and doesn’t make it to work in Wellington later that evening and is known to have left his cell phone behind in Rotorua.
36 hours later the best we can do is leave this to a few relatives mounting road side searches on possible routes he could have taken.
Given the circumstances I’m reading below I am wondering what the hell we own air force helicopters for (that are sitting a few kilometres away from bulls) or why we have search and rescue teams.
Is this any different to a climber stuck up Mt Taranaki or a German tourist lost in the bush?

Hi
By accepting an interim order, would you be effectively delaying any action that the court would take on the matter?
Appreciate any thoughts on interim orders.
Cheers,
B.
Given the significant changes in behaviour that occurred in familycaught$, both before the Bristol murders and suicide and after, it is important that this report receives close scrutiny.
If it was marked in accordance with professional social science research standards, in my opinion it would receive an E rating. It is not fit for the purpose of informing legislation, but unfortunately it did have a little impact.

[Media reporting impact analysis]
Rosemary Perkin, the 35-year-old Nelson woman found dead along with her three young daughters in their home, was an ordinary woman living an unremarkable life in suburban Stoke.
Police believe Mrs Perkin killed her daughters Alice, aged 8, Maria, 6, and 23-month-old Cherie in their beds before killing herself in the basement of their Songer Street home some time over the weekend.

What would of happened if this were a male teacher?
Looking forward to a Judge applying the same sentance to the next male teacher.
Obviously no one could possibly condone the tragic event of Ed Livingstone and his children. In the NZ Herald’s publications highlighting the shortcomings of this father over the past 2 days, and also in all the other reporting since this dreadful event took place I have been unable to find a reason for the protection order – sure there has been statements about breaching the PO but can we please go back a step – can someone enlighten me as to the reason for PO in the first place – and were accusations ever proven? This to me is where the crux of this matter lies. I am a grandmother and have seen first hand the damage that can be done to children and fathers by vindictive women whose only ‘reason’ for PO is that ‘I am scared’ no proof required – not good enough I’m afraid too much damage results – everyone has their breaking point.
My story fortunately has an happy outcome – my son now (after 8 yrs) has day to day care of his children.

Unbelievable: It has just been revealed by the Guardian newspaper that the male suicide rate is 3 1/2 times that of the female suicide rate in England.
Of course I am not suggesting that the rate of male suicide is unbelievable, it is a headline that contained not only the word
Male
or the word
Suicide
You’ve spotted it too haven’t you?
OMG! The words …
Male and Suicide
… appeared in the same headline. (more…)
